Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
